“Gesstwood
is a facility open to all; young and old. Students and adults get a real sense
of self and what it means to be one with nature. They learn about themselves;
who they are, the power they possess and the strength within each of them. They
are challenged to investigate their leadership abilities and how they can use
them to make a difference. Being vulnerable in nature is key,” says James
Cowper, Principal and Leadership Camp Leader, Kingsville Elementary Public
School, Greater Essex County District School Board.
Located
30 minutes away in the heart of Essex County, Gesstwood is considered our local
hidden gem on 62 acres of playing grounds, beautiful forest and meandering
streams. Over 7,000 students and 70+ adult groups a year unplug and participate
in outdoor education programs that allow leadership skills to be developed
naturally. Through experiential learning, program participants discover the
roles that they take working within a group, what skills they bring and areas
of improvement. They learn by expanding their comfort zones.
To
keep up with increasing demands of its growing program rosters, Gesstwood is
launching a fundraising campaign to upgrade facilities and expand learning elements
for the young leaders of tomorrow. Their wish list spans: upgrading overnight
facilities and washrooms to offer overnight camp all year round, like
snowshoeing in the winter; enhancing programs like their canopy tour, and
opening the camp to families on weekends.
“Throughout
the Gesstwood experience, participants are encouraged to take on roles you
would not normally do – find your voice, share your ideas, step back and
investigate other people’s leadership styles. It’s fun for all ages.
Electronics are turned off, we run around, act silly and break barriers, all
through a common outdoor experience,” said Karen Seguin, Executive Director,
Gesstwood Camp & Retreat Centre.
