ODETTE MBAS CELEBRATE COMMUNITY LEADERS DEC. 16, 2011

The MBA class of 2012 at the Odette School Business will celebrate local leadership when they launch the inaugural "Conversations with Community Champions event" on Friday, December 16, 2011 at the Odette School of Business, University of Windsor from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The event marks the culmination of a semester’s work on developing personal leadership strengths and learning about leadership from the very best in our community. Each MBA team was partnered with two local leaders. Through extensive background research and personal interviews with the leaders, the MBA students enriched their knowledge of the skills, abilities and attitudes necessary to become a passionate leader who makes a difference in the lives of those around them and in their community. The event is an opportunity to celebrate the talents, commitment and the many contributions of Windsor’s own Community Champions. The featured leaders will be presented by teams in rooms 321 and 210, beginning at 10:30 A.M. in the Odette School of Business building.

These Champions are very worthy of celebration. Each has forged their own leadership path and made Windsor and Essex County a stronger and more vibrant community. They inspire leadership in others. They are all leaders in giving back to the community.

The MBA class of 2012 will “pay it forward” over the next year through mentoring and helping to develop the leadership potential of a talented group of Forster Secondary School students in co-operation with their teacher, Mr. Greg Adler. These students and their teacher will also be present at this event. They are our next generation of our community champions!

This year, the featured Community Champions are:

Ari Freed (Freed’s of Windsor); Rose Anguiano Hurst (WEST of Windsor); Ted Farron (Farron’s Gourmet Meats); Adam Vasey (Pathways to Potential); Karen Behune Plunkett (WE Tech); Carol Derbyshire (Hospice of Windsor); Jennifer Jones (MediaStreet Productions); John Elliot (Sandwich Teen Action Group); Joe Ouellette (Acrolab); Elaine Whitmore (John McGivney Centre); Chandra Dass (Downtown Mission); and Jim Marsh (WFT Investments, and Odette SIFE Faculty Advisor).

This event begins in room 210 Odette at 10 a.m. All media are welcome. Presentations will begin at 10:30 in rooms 210 and 321 following introductory remarks; cameras can be set up in rooms 210 and 321 at 9:45 A.M. The community leaders and students will be available for interviews from 9:45 to 10 and at 12 noon.

FREE LEGAL ADVICE FOR SMALL BUSINESS UNTIL DEC. 11!

Christmas Has Arrived Early for Ontario Small and Mid-Sized Businesses!

All Week Long, Small and Mid-Sized Businesses Get the Valuable Gift of Free Legal Advice

It won’t fit into a stocking or under a tree, but Ontario’s small and mid-sized businesses are still getting a great early Christmas gift this year from DAS Canada. All week, DAS is giving the gift of free legal advice. From now until Sunday, Ontario small and mid-sized business owners will be able to get a taste of DAS Canada’s Legal Expense Insurance solution by calling the company’s legal hotline and receiving free qualified legal advice. Callers will be connected with a lawyer to answer their business-related legal questions, free of charge.

Questions to the Legal hotline can be about anything from employment disputes to unpaid receivables to health and safety closures or any other potential legal headaches that could arise. With the average cost of a lawyer in Ontario running at over $355 per hour, most Ontario businesses will greatly benefit from a means of having affordable access to the legal system.

Unforeseen challenges can arise at any time, and if you don’t know your rights and responsibilities, you could find yourself quickly entangled in a legal nightmare,” said Barbara Haynes, CEO of DAS Canada. “For smaller companies for whom retaining a lawyer is out of reach, our policies can make the difference between business success and going under.”

To assist Ontario small and mid-sized businesses with their legal matters, DAS Canada has opened up its legal support hotline to business owners throughout the province for a full week, beginning 12:01 am on December 5, 2011 and ending at 11:59 pm on December 11, 2011. Business owners can call 1-877-88-ADVICE (1-877-882-3842) and use the promo code ONTFREE during that period to have access to qualified advice on their legal issues.

The company is also hosting a “business legal nightmares” contest to hear from small and mid-sized business owners about legal challenges they’ve had to face. Participants can enter for a chance to win $1,000 Staples gift card by visiting www.das.ca/ontariostories and telling their stories.

DASbusiness is designed to protect businesses against thecost of legal disputes, allowing them to focus on their core business whileknowing that their legal fees and expenses are covered if and when the needarises. The company’s call-center provides policyholders with direct access to legal experts to assist them in determining the best course of action in a given situation.
