Relay For Life Windsor & LaSalle June 20, 2014

The 2014 Relay for Life Windsor/LaSalle is set to begin with an inspirational roar. Six-year old, two-time brain cancer survivor, Abbey (from Relay For Life team Abbey’s Army) will sing Katy Perry’s Roar the song that motivated her during her radiation treatments. This makes her the youngest survivor to take the stage during a Windsor/LaSalle Opening Ceremony. Relay for Life takes place on Friday, June 20 at 7p.m. at the Vollmer Cultural and Recreation Complex in LaSalle.

Along with Abbey, 68 teams will take turns walking or running around a track overnight. Participants are current and former cancer patients (aka Survivors), family, friends, hospitals, neighbors, businesses, faith-based and civic organizations. Their purpose is to eradicate all forms of cancer and celebrate life.

Following the opening ceremony is the Survivor’s Victory Lap, where all cancer survivors are invited to walk the first inspirational lap. We will have a Luminary ceremony at 10:00 p.m. and a Fight Back ceremony at 3:00am. The remainder of the Relay will be filled with special performances, games, food and music. For additional fun, this year’s theme, Relay through the Decades invites participants to bring items from different decade to relive memories and bring each decade’s unique culture to the Relay. The event concludes on Saturday June 21 at 7 a.m.

“A cancer diagnosis can be devastating. It’s hard on family, physically painful and leaves you with more questions than answers. I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of cancer in the blood in 2009 and have been in treatment off and on since then and have more ahead of me. When I heard about the Relay For Life, I was intrigued, it sounds exciting, hopeful and I can’t wait to be a part of it! I just registered for my first Survivor’s Victory Lap and I’ll be playing some great tunes onstage to go with this year’s theme Relay Through the Decades. If you haven’t yet, grab a team, and register! I’ll see you there!” said Thorald Findlay (aka DJThor Windsor).

Relay for Life invites everyone from the Windsor/LaSalle area to get involved. To date, 68 teams are registered with about 600 participants who have fundraised roughly $69,000 so far. Donations are given to the Canadian Cancer Society and benefit cancer research and programs. To register, join a team or donate, go online to www.relayforlife.ca/windsor. Another way to lend support is to buy a virtual Luminary to be displayed on the Relay for Life Facebook page and/or an actual Luminary lit during the luminary ceremony. Luminary bags are $5 each and available at the event.

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer.

For the third consecutive year, Art in the Park has been named one of the top 100 events of its kind by Festivals and Events Ontario.

But even before the Willistead Park gates open for this eagerly-anticipated art show and sale on Saturday morning, there will again be a special pre-event launch party in the Spirit Tent on the grounds on Friday evening, June 6. Then next up – the Mike Ure band – a popular local country music band that will take to the stage at 8 p.m.  The headliner for this year’s kickoff event is the hottest new country duo out of Toronto – Autumn Hill – performing at 9:30 p.m.  This Canadian duo’s debut single, "Anything At All," entered the Canadian Hot 100 in January 2013 and that same year were nominated as “Rising Star” at the CCMA’s.  Proof of their success continued in 2014 as they are nominated for a Juno as “Breakthrough Group of the Year.”   Come see this incredible duo who are definitely going places in Country music on our AIP Spirit Tent stage.

In keeping with our down-home country theme, the audience will be able to kick their heels with some lively line dancing. Advance tickets for the Friday night launch party are available on line for $15 each at aipwindsor.com, and are available at Windsor Family Credit Union (WFCU) locations, High Jinks Indoor Playground and Motion Specialties Windsor.  Tickets purchased at the Willistead Park gates the night of the event will be $20 each if still available.

In addition to the big kickoff party, there will be live music throughout the park all day Saturday and Sunday, including strolling musicians who will perform wherever they happen to stop, and lively musical entertainment at the Willistead Park Coach House and the park gates.  Popular local musicians and groups will provide live musical entertainment at the Spirit Tent all day Saturday.  For the 3rd year in a row, AIP is proud to present the Music Express Talent Show.  This competition, in its 13th year showcases the incredibly talented youth in our community from grade school to secondary school students.  We welcome everyone to cheer on the musicians of our future.  Live music is scheduled all day culminating with a 9:30 p.m. performance by British Beat 66, who have closed our Saturday evening entertainment year after year.  We start again on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Another great day showcasing local talent.

We’ve made our AIP Kids Zone even bigger this year.  The area at AIP where children have their very own supervised play area – where they can sing, dance and make their own fun.  Interactive entertainment is non- stop and your children can show off their artistic talents in our AIP Children’s Art Contest sponsored by High Jinks, and the Karaoke stage presented by FUNatics.  Several bounce rides, and face painting booths will also be available at nominal costs.

268 Vendors Signed Up For Art In The Park

With two weeks still to go before the big event, more than 265 vendors have signed up for this year’s Art in the Park.

“As of today, some 268 vendors have booked exhibit space for this year’s show, which is shaping up as one of our largest and best ever”,  said Phil Cohen Co-Chair for Art in the Park 2014. “They’re coming to Willistead from all over Ontario and Quebec, from as far away as Atlanta, Georgia. Thirty-five of this year’s exhibitors are first-time participants. Many of our loyal vendors have exhibited and sold their creative wares at Windsor’s favourite annual outdoor arts and crafts show for more than 30 years. We’re gratified by their continuous, enthusiastic involvement.”
Under the auspices of the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) the 36th annual Art in the Park will be held on the grounds of Willistead Manor on Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8.   Earlier this year – for the third consecutive year – Art in the Park was named one of the Top 100 events of its kind by Festivals and Events Ontario. Proceeds from Art in the Park go toward supporting special needs children, youth and adults as well as the ongoing restoration of Windsor’s architectural jewel, Willistead Manor. To date, this beloved cultural event has raised well over $1.3 million for Willistead alone.

The 268 vendors will exhibit and sell their unique wares in an enticing array of tents and display booths set up around the perimeter of Willistead Park.  Art in the Park is one of just a few “juried” public art exhibitions at which standards of quality and acceptance is at a consistently high level.   Among this year’s exhibits will be historic Celtic stonework by Duncan MacDonald, who hails from the Isle of Islay in Great Britain, and Great Gatsby-inspired jewelry and accessories by Romance and Ruin.  Exciting new works in all media – fine art, clay and home décor – will also be featured.
Check out a preview of all the incredible Art that will be available at this year’s event on our AIP Online Gallery  on the AIP Website Home page or visit the AIP Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ArtInTheParkWindsor.

Remember to take the free tour of the glorious Willistead Manor while you are at Art in the Park and visit our “Events in the Manor.”  All groups are local non-profits. They will be showcasing their programs, showing member art, offering some interactive activities and performances.

Worried about finding a parking space near Willistead for this year’s Art in the Park?  No problem!  Just park your car at one of two handy satellite parking lots and hop aboard our fast, friendly free shuttle service to and from Art in the Park.  As in previous years, getting to and from Windsor’s favorite outdoor arts and crafts exhibition will be a breeze.  Just leave your wheels at one of two convenient parking lots and take our complimentary shuttle bus for the short, friendly ride to Willistead Park. After you’ve seen it all, we’ll whisk you, your friends and family – and your newly-acquired objets d’art -- right back to your car. It’s as easy as that!
Art in the Park courtesy shuttles will run a continuous two-way schedule between both complimentary parking areas – at the Hiram Walker & Sons employee parking lot at 2072 Riverside Drive E. at Montreuil St., and the Windsor Regional Hospital employees’ shuttle lot at 1591 Kildare Rd., just north of Tecumseh Rd. E. behind the SWT Group office building.  The free shuttles will operate from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

We are again partnering with G & L Stevenson Transport to provide this courtesy shuttle service for our weekend guests”, said Cohen. “We’re encouraging everyone to use this fast, efficient service right to the park gates.
